Family Memories

When I started doing faces for my Harry Potter quilt about 5 years ago - I always wanted to extend this into the real world - well into quilt blocks of real people not just fictional characters.

Before I go any further I have to admit that my Harry Potter quilt (or should I say quilts as both my kids want one) is still not finished.  I revisit it as often as I can but it very exhausting as the faces take a long time and are very complex.

Which brings us to today.  I made this for my dad for his 80th birthday late last year.  It is a portrait of his mum.  There was meant to be one of his dad as well but I am still not happy with the pattern so it remains undone.  Not enough hours in the day.

This is the photo I used.  It is a good one to use, as all the features are clear which is crucial when drafting the pattern.  Sometimes when designing a pattern for a face I try several different photos of the same face before I am happy with the result.  I think for Harry Potter I did about 10.  Anyway I digress.

This is the finished block, which I turned into a wall hanging.  I think she looks young and beautiful.

Dad was very happy with the result.

  2. What a beautiful piece! I bet your father was very flattered and pleased! How about a Johnny Depp BOM?? Your faces are so life like! Be careful you could end up in a magazine like Jen! :)
